JC's ABC music collection

This is John Chambers' ABC music collection. First, a disclaimer for those who came here looking for recordings: There are no recordings of music here. If you don't understand how you can have a music site without recordings, you are definitely at the wrong site. If you are a musician who is interested in a simple, portable, plain-text music notation with software that will run just about anywhere, you might be at one of the right sites.

ABC education:

doc/ is my collection of ABC documents.

Chris Walshaw's ABC home page, with a list of available software.

ABCintro.txt is a plain-text introduction to ABC.

ABCprimer.html is another introduction to ABC, in HTML.

ABCtutorial.html is a longwinded explanation of ABC.

ABC-FAQ.html is a collection of Frequently Asked Questions about ABC.

test/ is my collection of ABC test files.

My ABC Tune Finder.

This is a form that lets you search the index files produced by the ABCbot program. It shows the matching tunes, and lets you retrieve them in several formats. This page has been listed as a cool site by the Open Directory project. There is also an experimental version for those who might be curious about what I'm working on.

If you don't have ABC software, you might like to try a tool that I'm working on that returns the tunes in various formats: CLICK HERE. This will return the page you're looking at now, but the ABC files will be expanded to show all the tunes, and each tune will have a line of links to return it in a number of different formats.

This not only lets you donate all your ABC tunes to my archive (for free!), but includes conversion to PS, GIF and MIDI.

Indexes of ABC tunes There are a number of efforts underway to build indexes of the growing ABC sites on the Net. They all work rather differently. Here are some of them:

Chris Walshaw's web-wide ABC index: This is mostly an index of several large tune collections, with a thematic index to help find a tune if you know part of it.
John Chambers' ABC index: This is the results of my ABC search robot. The files are used by my ABC Tune Finder
Richard Robinson's Tunesearch: Compiled from index sent to him from several large ABC sites. You can search for tune title, rhythm, composer, origin, etc.

In addition, some people have produced indexes to their own collections:

Henrik Norbeck's index: This is an index of Henrik's impressive tune collection.
Frank Nordberg's ABC list: Frank has listed a lot of online music sites.

Copyright:: If a tune here is copyrighted and the owner objects to it being here, I will of course remove it. Or, preferably, I'd be happy to add the appropriate copyright information in the tune's headers, including email and/or web addresses. I'm always trying to complete the header information for tunes. So if you know of relevant attribution that is missing for any tune (especially if it's your tune), please send me email.
