The William Christie Collection
The William Christie Collection
"A Collection of Strathspeys, Reels, Hornpipes, Waltzes, &c."
by William Christie, first published 1820.

William Christie (c. 1778-1849) was a dancing master, musician, and Episcopal cleryman. He was Scottish, but his published collection was a mixture of tunes from Scotland, England, Ireland, and France, plus some tunes that he and his musical friends wrote.
Most of the files here contain a single tune. The file names are of the form PPN_Tune_Title.abc, where PP is the page number [1-40], N is the tune number on the page [1-4]. The Tune_Title has initial articles in lower case, the next word capitalized, and spaces replaced by '_'. There are a few tunes in the collection that use features from ABC version 2, which a lot of ABC software might not handle correctly. The most common examples are the diminuendo and crescendo symbols, which look like stretched-out '>' and '<' characters. There are also a few tunes that use "voice overlay", with fragments of two "voices" in a few measures. In such cases, there are two versions of the tune, the file names end with .abc1.abc or .abc2.abc, which seems to work well on the computers that I have access to.

Toward the end of the list, there are some large files (CSRHW-abc1.abc, CSRHW-abc2.abc), which contain the entire collection.

The main source of ambiguity in the book is that repeat symbols are ambiguous and inconsistent, and don't match modern conventions. The ABC uses "|:", "::", and ":|, but may not match the original intentions. Some tunes have "||" to indicate phrasing, mainly to help in proofreading, but most of these have been reduced to the original "|". (I may have missed a few of these.)

Staff breaks don't always match the book's, but were adjusted to get better spacing. (This isn't musically significant, and you should change the staff layouts to match your needs.)
