This book is a combination of two of Pat Shaw's books:
"Between Two Ponds" and "Among the Pines".
The former was published by Pat himself in 1976.
The latter was finished and published by Marjorie Fennessy in 1983, after Pat's death in 1977.
The two were combined into one book and published by Pinewoods Camp in 1985.

Some liberties have been taken to deal with the differences between standard staff
notation and ABC: Long notes with chord changes have been rewritten as tied notes.
Staff breaks have been changed to prevent overly-long lines of text.
Chords with a bass note below the chord have been rewritten as "Chord/bass".
In a few cases, initial bar lines have been added as an attachment point for the section letter.
None of these should change the meaning of the music.

I've been transcribing the tunes in this book over the years as various local dance
teachers call for them in dance programs that I play for. With time, I may have all
of them in ABC format. If you need one that's not here, let me know.
-- John Chambers

This dance should be very lyrical in character and not too fast. The names of the figures are
those used for the figures of a series of dances known to have been danced in the village of
Llangadfan, Montgomeryshire (now Powys), in the late 18th century and derived from a manuscript
in the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. Notice that the 1st figure is based on movements
where inside hands are taken, the 2nd on movements in which hands are not given at all and the 3rd
on those in which hands are joined either left in left, or right in right.

Pat's pun refers to Jack and Genny Shimer. Genny is former National Director of the Country
Dance and Song Society of America and a past President of Pinewoods Camp, Inc.

This should be danced throughout with a light, quiet, economical rant step. The tune should
be played fast, at a real North Country rant tempo, not the soggy speed so often found elsewhere.
Notice that one moves on 4 places each round of the dance.

member of the Court Square Dancers of Charlottesville, Virginia.

NOTE: this should be brisk and lively and should have gay abandon (or should we
say Gay's abandon?) The A music should be danced with the steps as indicated and
the whole of the B music with a skipping or skip change of step, except for the last
4 bars which should be walked.

May Gadd, whose nickname was "Gay," was one of Cecil Sharp's dance demonstrators. In 1927
she was sent to America by the English Folk Dance Society to organize and teach the New York
Branch. In 1937 she was named National Director of CDSS and served in that capacity until 1972.

NOTE: The music should be lively, yet controlled, and danced with a skip change of step. The rings
should be slipped and the rest walked. The dance was first performed in Dr John Ramsay's
honour at the Levi Jackson week-end in September 1974. One very slight alteration to it has been
made since then.

NOTE: Although this need not be taken too slowly, it should have more of the character of
the Minuet than of the Waltz. Musicians should take care to make the third beat of the bar
really lead into the next in order to give the necessary flow to carry the dancers along. Each
movement of the A music should be exactly phrased, whereas the movements of the B music
should flow into each other much more; though, of course, at the end of the B1 there should be
a brief instant of rest when everyone is on the wrong side of the set. The 1st couples after
their left hand turn at the end of the B1 should not go straight into their right hand turn the
shortest way, but should fall back into their progressed places, improper, on the last bar of B1.

Joan Carr was Associate Director of CDSS when Pat was here.

Note: In B2 the 2nd and 3rd couples do complete straight heys across the set, making large loops at
the ends to allow the 1st couple to make half-turns. Be careful to observe the rhythmic differences
in the music between bars 1 and 2 and bars 5 and 6.

The Camp House is one of the oldest building at Pinewoods Camp. It serves as a central gathering
place and afternoon tea is often served here when camp is in session.
