This collection was published by Ernest K\"ohler & Son in Edinburgh, in the 1880s.
It was originally published as a series of 8-page booklets.
These were later collected into three volumes, each of roughly 120 pages and 200 tunes.
They contain a mixture of old tunes and newly-composed tunes,
mostly intended for "country dance" events.
In addition to the usual reels, jigs and strathspeys,
there are a small number of waltzes, polkas, shottishes,
and other couple dances that were popular at the time.

In 2011, I was unable to locate any printed source of the K\"ohlers collection.
The transcriptions here were made using photocopies found at archive.org and youscribe.com.
The archive.org copies are difficult to find due to garbling of the name, with "K\"ohlers" reduced to "klers".
They may be downloaded as PDFs, but these contain some pages that are blurred beyond readability.
The youscribe.org copies are more legible, but much more difficult to navigate, and can't be downloaded in their entirety.
Both of these seem to be from a physical copy kept at the National Library of Scotland,
which doesn't make them available on their own web site, but refers readers to the archive.org version.

The ABC transcriptions here have an index number that indicates the location of each tune.
It is of the form VPPPN, where V is the volume number (1-3), PPP is the page number (004-288),
and N is the tune's number on the page (1-4). N may be 0 for separate ABC files that contain title header information for the three volumes and for a number of tune sets in the collection.
