The abc language was originally invented by Chris Walshaw. On his abc home page
http://abcnotation.org.uk/you can find links to the official abc standard definition and to a wide variety of abc related software. Beware however that abctab2ps deviates considerably from the abc standard, because the standard does not support tablature at all.
