Several versions of this collection have been published. The first (1983) version was mostly used for the transcriptions here. There's a project underway to combine the tunes visible on each 2-page set into a single .abc file. This is partly because version 3 has the tunes in alphabetical order, which makes tunes easy to find, but adjacent tunes usually don't work well together. Version 1 has them in 2-page sets of (mostly) 4 tunes that usually (but not always) make good dance sets. Version 3 had chords added, which can be a help in gatherings.

Another goal here is to produce more compact versions of the tunes. This is so sets fit better on the small-screen gadgets that are becoming popular in many musical circles. We'll see how well this works in practice. Here in New England, the NEFR books are quite popular with many people, but there are complaints about the difficulties in using the later book(s) at a dance. The main change here is that many tunes have been somewhat compacted, mostly by using repeats with multiple endings, to help make them readable on small screens. The entries with names ending in "set" mostly now come in 2 or 3 versions. The one with the largest number in the "st" (staffs/staves) has the version from the book, usally with a four 4-staff layout. Those with smaller st values have various ways of compressing the tunes, usually by adding repeats when possible and mostly ending with 1st and 2nd endings. A few have been further reduced by comparing them with other versions online, often leading to somewhat simplified ("basic") versions. You can test them and see which fit your screen best.

And, of course, the best approach is to install ABC software that fits your needs, and just download them and feed them to your software as needed. If you come across sets that your groups likes, put them online for the rest of us.
