Date: Tue, 2 Dec 2003 12:47:16 +0000 To: strathspey:strathspey.org From: Bryan McAlister Subject: Rugby As the World Cup rolled to its close I remembered that a couple of years ago I was asked to write a dance for a Ceilidh to mark the retirement of the Medical officer for the Scottish Rugby Union. Here it is ... Please note that it was written in language more suitable for calling at a Ceilidh and in Bars 17-24 it was always intended that the figure should be somewhat untidy, possibly even involving a degree of physical contact and with each set doing it slightly differently. A Ceilidh dance audience had no problems doing this with a Caller yelling at them (as a Referee would do in the real thing). The Oval Ball (s of Donald MacLeod) Formation - Long set, 4 couples 4 x 32 bar jig Tune - Donald MacLeod of Selkirk Bars 1- 8 ( The Lineout ) 1-4 All dance 4 small steps forward four steps back 5-8 All turn partner by right hand back to place (swing if you want) Bars 9-16 ( The Rolling Maul ) 9-10 The dancers at top of set (nearest the band) face down the set, give inner hand to the second dancer and dance round outside them to 3rd position. 11-14 3rd couple dancers face down, link outer arm with 4th couple dancers and dance right round them back to third place. 15-16 1st dancers face up give outer hands to 2nd dancers and dance back to the top of the set. Bars 17-24 ( Turning the Scrum ) 4 women join hands and forming into a tight circle dance round to the left back to the right and back to place 4 men join hands and forming a larger circle around the four ladies dance round to the left and back to the right and back to place Bars 25-32 ( Crossing the line ) 25-28 1st dancers dance zig zag down set, outside 2nd dancer, inside 3rd dancer and outside 4th dancer. 29-32 All dancers swing (birl) partners and all move up ready to start again.
