Setup: Ubuntu 8/04 (Hardy Heron) with HP Photosmart C4400 printer. CUPS running and sharing the printer. Vista: In Control Panel -> Program -> Turn windows features on or off -> Print Services, make sure that "LPR Port Monitor" is checked, or Vista won't allow use of IPP print services. Hit the OK button. It will take several minutes, those two windows will disappear. You'll almost certainly need to install a driver for the printer on Vista. If you have the printer's CD, first install any driver(s) you find there. Or you can probably go to the manufacturer's web site and download a driver, which is what I did for the C4400 printer, since HP had a newer version online. In Control Panel -> Printers, click "Add Printer". This will open a window that says "Choose a local or network printer". Click "Add a network, ... printer". You'll get a "Search for available printers..." window. Click "The printer that I want isn't listed". This gives "Find a printer by name or TCP/IP address". Select "Add a printer using TCP/IP address or hostname", click Next. This gives "Type a printer hostname or IP address" window. Under "Device type:" select "TCP/IP Device". Fill in the "Hostname or IP address:" with "http://:631/printers/" where the is whatever the server machine calls it. ("lpstat -p -d" should give you the possible PrinterName strings.) Click the Next button. This gives the "Additional Port Information Required" window. It says "The device is not found on the network." This appears bogus. Select "Custom", and click "Settings". A new "Configure Standard TCP/IP Port Monitor" window appears. Select "LPR", and copy the PrinterName string to "Queue Name:". Click on OK. The window will disappear, returning you to the "Additional Port Information Required" window. Click on Next. You'll get the "Install the print driver" window. Look throuth the Manufacturer list for the printer manufacturer's name, select it, and you should get a list of drivers in the "Printers" list. If the printer is on the list, select it. (If not, you'll have to find and install a driver and then return here.) Click on Next. You'll get the "Which version of the driver do you want to use?" Pick one, and click Next. You'll get the "Type a printer name" window. You might want to edit the name down to something easy to type. Select "Set as the default printer" if you like. Click Next. You should now have the "Installing printer" window. When it finishes, with luck it'll say "You've successfully added ". But it may or may not work. Click "Print a test page". If the page prints, you've succeeded. [I haven't yet got it to work.]
